The Future of Proxmark3 Standalone Mode

March 28, 2019

Using a Proxmark3 in red team scenarios can be very difficult. Whether it's the new RDV4 or older models, these all require extra components - USB battery, cables, mobile phone, etc. Another big problem is the lack of a good user interface. Some people may be OK reading state from LEDs and memorizing button push sequences to perform simple tasks but that can be rough when you are under pressure.

We listened to feedback collected from red teamers who perform physical security assessments and there were some common themes.

  1. No extra components. This means no PC, no external batteries, or cables.
  2. The device should be easy to conceal and operable with one hand
  3. Minimal learning curve
  4. Store multiple tags and replay them easily
  5. Quick startup
  6. Good read range

We set out to meet those goals and believe we've come up with a close to ideal solution - The ProxmarkPro. The "Pro" has an onboard battery that can be charged through the USB port. The on-screen menu and navigation switch eliminate a lot of the usual setup required to use traditional Proxmark3 models. The Pro is very easy to use for typical field applications without having to remember any command lines or fiddle with drivers and operating system settings.

The device starts up in seconds and has a simple easy-to-read character LCD that makes navigating and invoking functions a breeze. The display can be read in daylight or no-light conditions. Antennas can be swapped without the use of any tools. It reads Prox II tags at 140mm and Mifare tags at 80-100mm.

We're really happy with how it turned out and are excited to share it with the world. As always, firmware is a work in progress - if there are features you'd like to see please let us know.

The pre-order is now open and will close April 30. We plan on delivering the first batch of ProxmarkPros in June of 2019.
